Burt’s Bees, the leading manufacturer of earth-friendly natural care products has released yet another new product in their arsenal. A flooded market of anti-bacterial products has left an opportunity for Burt’s Bees to take what their best at and make old methods better, naturally.

At first glance this product has the familiar appearance of their entire line of products. To my surprise it was something that I could use every day. I’ve been looking for a hand sanitizer that isn’t full of nasty chemicals and my call is finally answered.

The initial reason why I wanted a product like this is because of the unnecessary chemicals in conventional products that are potentially hazardous.

Inactive ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Carbomer, FD & C Blue No. 1, FD&C Yellow No. 5, Fragrance, Glycerin, Isopropyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Myristate, Propylene Glycol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Water

I won’t go into detail on all of these chemicals but a great website to check for the safety of your cosmetic products is the CosmeticDatabase.com

Just type in the name and you can find exactly what each component is and what it does.

The Break-Down:

The main ingredient in Burt’s Bees Hand Sanitizer is Ethyl Alcohol 62%. Following thereafter Water, Witch Hazel, Glycerin, Natural Fragrance, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract.

According to CosmeticDatabase.com:

About ETHANOL: Ethanol is grain alcohol, considered broadly toxic and linked to birth defects. Potential risks from ethanol in personal care products, however, are dwarfed by risks posed from the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

It’s pretty hard to avoid something like that but it’s a risk you take.

Witch Hazel is produced from the leaves and bark of the North American Witch Hazel Shrub. This herb is mainly used on sores, bruises and swelling. The usage of this in this particular isn’t common and should be used more often because of the great properties it has when combined.

Aloe vera has been used externally to treat various skin conditions such as cuts, burns and eczema. It is alleged that sap from Aloe vera eases pain and reduces inflammation.

Product Experience:

This product has a good combination of natural ingredients when compared with traditional methods. I would like to see this product become organic but at $4.95 for 2 fl oz. it’s pricey already. The spray form used isn’t common but it seems as though you would use less over a gel. I used mine quickly which makes me monitor how much I use. When using it, it takes several sprays to get enough solution on your hand to rub with your other. This is why mine got used so quickly. The execution of the product in the form of a spray is original but I’m not so sure if it’s the best method. The smell of the product has a strong scent of aloe and witch hazel which is kind of pungent. I wouldn’t say that it smells “good” but there isn’t much you can do with the minimal amount of ingredients they used over others.

Conclusion:

In conclusion I’m very happy to see that a company has released a natural pocket hand-sanitizer. It’s a great product overall but I see room for improvement in the “scent” and value category in the future. $4.95 for such a small bottle is a bit pricey.
